WSET Level 2 Awards in Wines and Spirits

WSET Level 2 Awards in wines and spirits is essential for anyone wanting to get into the drinks/wine industry. It provides excellent all-round knowledge. The focus is on active learning which allows participants to take away knowledge that can be applied in practical situations.

This structured and informative course explores the major grape varieties and important regions that define the world’s key wines. You’ll learn about production, key labelling terminology and major classifications to help you identify wines with confidence. A basic overview of the key categories of spirits and liqueurs will also be provided.

Successful students will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

  • The important wine-producing regions of the world in which these grapes are grown
  • The production of sparkling, sweet, and fortified wines

Course duration

The course is 16 hours spread over 2 days (with revision & the exam on the final day) with a recommended 12 hours of private study in addition you will be expected to read the provided text book prior to commencing the course. The more study you can complete in preparation for the course the more you will gain from the classroom hours.

A pack will be sent to you with a course book, a study guide and a laminated tasting guide.

Frank Smulders MW

Frank Smulders is a Dutch Master of Wine, who has been working in the winebusiness since 1985. In 1992 he became the second European Master of Wine, following that he started teaching W.S.E.T. Diploma Course lessons in 1993.

He now works as a consultant for wine-producers as well as importers and distributors, but mostly he is known as Europe’s leading wine educator. Frank Smulders teaches on a regular basis in WSET courses in more than 15 countries.

Frank Smulders is known as an expert taster, and though he considers himself a generalist, he is known to be an expert in Champagne and especially Spain.

The course fee includes all study materials, wine samples, tuition, examination and provision of service equipment during the course. Study materials are issued at the start of the course.

Number of Wines and Spirits Tasted

You will taste approximately 35 different wines.


At the end of the final day there will be a one hour exam with 50 multiple choice questions and you need 55% to pass.

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for this qualification. You must be of legal drinking age to participate in any alcohol tasting. However, this is not a barrier to successfully completing the qualification.

Students completely new to wine and spirits study may wish to complete the Level 1 Award in Wines first. However, this is not essential.

You will be expected to read the provided text book prior to commencing the course.

All classes are delivered in English therefore a good level of English is beneficial.
